Today has been awesome, but bloody tiring.
A friend of mine was working at Tropfest and asked for volunteers. Because I’m trying to get media type experience and am always up for doing something new, I volunteered for the 8am-4pm shift.
I woke up at 5:50am and the sun wasn’t even up. But walking to the bus stop at 6:50am, it was so calm and peaceful, and I felt super productive being up so early. I was the first one on the bus at 7am, but it quickly filled up with other early risers. When I got to the city, there wasn’t any traffic. It was amazing, and I had some time to kill, so I wandered through Hyde Park and The Domain, enjoying how beautiful the quiet city was.
When I got to Tropfest, I found that another friend (pictured) was volunteering, too! I was so glad she was there, because our volunteer work definitely had negative aspects, but suffering through the sweltering heat and tedious work was so much more fun together!
We were working for Trop Jr, and goddamn, those kids were talented! We did some work at the LOL Juice tent (sponsors of Trop Jr) and cheesed it up for this polaroid. We also worked at the ABC tent, hanging alongside some people from Dance Academy. I’d never heard of this (apparently it’s a TV drama, not another reality talent show), but the screaming kids getting autographs and photos seemed to! it was quite amusing, but the Dance Academy peeps were nice. Other, less exciting work included setting up chairs, packing up chairs, setting up the judging area and laminating stuff in the office (which was air conditioned, at least)
We were buggered by lunch time, and our packed lunches didn’t seem appealing at all, so we ducked off to Martin Place and got beers and pub grub at an RSL there. AMAZING. We were totally content and infinitely more energetic after that!
I got to leave at 4pm, so I wandered through a considerably busier Hyde Park, got a frappuccino from Starbucks, and collected my ticket for The Used while I was in the city!
Now I’m home alone, and about to write up my first ever article as a paid journalist!
